We all have experienced one of those nights when we cannot get proper sleep due to some pain, stress, or anxiety. It results in fatigue during the next day. While having one of those nights is not much of a big deal, its frequent occurrence can significantly affect your social and personal life. Such conditions are termed as Sleep problems or sleep disorders. The sleep problems may arise from two main factors- some other health issue or a toxic lifestyle. According to the experts, an average human being requires almost 7-8 hours of daily sleep. It includes around five sleeping cycles of nearly 90 min each. Sleep problems prevent an individual from getting that amount of regular sleep.
Symptoms of Sleep problems
Different sleeping disorders have different symptoms. Here are some of the common ones-
- Inability to fall asleep during the night time.
- People suffering from these problems often get irritated on small things.
- A sleeping disorder patient can not concentrate on his tasks.
- Frequent feeling of depression and fatigue.
Types of Sleep problems
The problem of regular lack of sleep can be divided into the following categories-
It is the most common type of sleeping disorder. An individual suffering from Insomnia has difficulties in falling asleep. It may also include waking up in the middle of sleep and the inability to go back to sleep. Insomnia has lots of side effects such as lack of concentration, irritation, ineffective performance, etc. There are two main categories of Insomnia-
- Primary Insomnia: This type of Insomnia does not occur due to other health problems.
- Secondary Insomnia: It occurs due to some other health problems such as cancer or asthma.
In this sleeping problem, the individual stops and starts breathing intermittently during his sleep. Loud snoring, headaches, waking up with a dry mouth and inability to breathe while sleeping is the main symptoms of Sleep Apnea. There are three types of Sleep Apnea- Obstructive, Central sleep, and Complex Sleep Apnea.
It is a disorder that causes excessive sleepiness in an individual. The patient may also suffer from uncontrolled instances of falling asleep or even hallucination. For these people, the REM part of their sleep cycle occurs immediately after sleep and not after four NREM periods.
Delayed Sleep Phase disorder:
This one does not involve a lack of sleep. People who suffer from this disorder fall asleep a few hours later than an average person. The patient has the habit of sleeping late and waking up late. Due to this reason, they could not properly manage their student or working life.
Shift work sleep disorder:
This sleep problem mainly pesters shift workers. Whenever an individual has to work during his standard sleeping time, he faces this disorder. Due to insufficient sleep during the usual time, the patient could not sleep in his free time also.
If the sleep problems are due to some other health problem, then the treatment of that health issue will also eliminate the inability to sleep. However, if the sleeping disorder is due to a toxic lifestyle, then the change of lifestyle along with some medical help can only improve the situation.
- Lifestyle changes:
- Lower the consumption of tobacco, alcohol, and carbohydrate meals.
- Add more vegetables to the diet.
- Reduce stress through regular exercise.
- Medical help:
- Use sleeping pills with the recommendation of a doctor.
- Take Melatonin supplements
- Try cold medication.
Sleep problems can create a massive issue in an individual’s health, attitude, and performance at work. So, if the symptoms are detected, it is advisable to consult the doctor immediately.
